In Talkin’ Pitt Episode Twenty-Nine, Coach Young talks with Strength and conditioning legend Buddy Morris of the Arizona Cardinals. For anyone who doesn’t know Buddy Morris, he is currently in his 11th year with the Cardinals and, in 2021, was named Strength Coach of the Year. Buddy is a proud Pittsburgher and a forever Panther, as he was a track team member during his undergrad. Buddy got his start in strength and Conditioning as the first football strength coach for Pitt’s football team. In this week’s episode, Buddy goes into how he has been using contraction training with his athletes and how the Cardinals use their force plates in return for playing. It was an honor to have Buddy on the podcast, and I appreciate all the knowledge bombs he dropped during the podcast. We look forward to having him on again. Talkin’ Pitt Episode Twenty-Eight, Coach Young hosts this week's episode with track and strength coach Chris Korfist. Coach Korfist owns Slow Guy Speed School and is co-owner of REFLEXIVE PERFORMANCE RESET (RPR). In this episode, Coach Young gets an insight into how Coach Korfist uses the 1080 motion products to develop the athletes he works with. Pitt Sports Performance got a 1080 at the end of last year and has been finding how to implement it into our team's training. Coach Korfist has nearly a decade of using the 1080 Sprint with more recorded runs than any other coach. Talkin’ Pitt Episode Twenty-Seven, Coach Young hosts this week's episode with special guest Michael Tucker. Coach Tucker is the Director of the Strength and Conditioning at Bridgewater College in Virginia. Coach Young and Coach Tucker worked together at Bridgewater when Coach Young was the Director, and Coach Tucker was his first hire. In the episode, Coach Young hears about how Bridgewater has continued to grow. Then they dive into the new systems Tucker has implemented since taking over, and what growing pains has Coach Tucker had during his first year leading a department. Later in the episode, the two coaches dive into the challenges of working at a small school with over 500 student-athletes and how Coach Tucker treats each team as their own with programs and exercise selection. In this week's episode, Coach Otto dives into all aspects of how he ran his past off-season with the softball program at Penn State. At the beginning of the episode, Coach Otto gives a detailed breakdown of how he plans out training blocks and creates his annual plan. We get an insight into the technology and the KPI tracking that Coach Otto uses at Penn State and how he is building out softball usage of sports science. Talkin’ Pitt Episode Twenty-Four, Coach Young is back as this week's host to kick off the podcast for 2024. For this week's episode, Coach Young has a chance to talk with Matt Mitcheroney. Coach Mitch is currently at James Madison University as the Associate Director of Olympic Sports Strength and Conditioning Coach, overseeing all aspects of training for baseball & softball. During this conversation, Coach Mitch dives into how he was influenced by his early mentor, Sean Foster, during his time at American University in DC. Got bit by the weightlifting bug and how it has made him a better coach when working with his athletes around positions and movement standards. Later in the episode, Coach Mitch gives his view on periodization, when he has found ways to plan out long stretches of training, and when he needs a plan that is more fluid depending on the sport, the season of that sport, and the training age of his athletes. Coach Wysocki and Young met as undergrads at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. Coach Wysocki is currently with the Arizona Coyotes of the NHL. His position is Assistant Performance & Reconditioning Coach. During this podcast, Coach Wysocki breaks down his role with the Coyotes and his experience from working in the private sector at MBSC to pro sports. Later in the episode, Coach Wysocki breaks down how they use their sports science to gain baseline information on their guys and how they will bring athletes back from injury using that baseline as a reference. Talkin’ Pitt Episode Twenty-Two, Coach Young is back as a guest host. For this week's episode, Coach Young has a chance to reconnect with mentor and friend Josh Epstein. Coach Epstein works with the United States Air Force located in Florida. Coach Young met Coach Epstein during his summer internship at James Madison University in the Summer of 2017. In this episode, Coach Epstein describes the different experiences between working in college strength & conditioning and moving to the tactical side. One of the big questions Coach Epstein answered was how he plans his yearly training even with no major final competition to peak for. Also, we learn what tech he uses to monitor wellness and performance. At the end of the episode, Coach Young asks Coach Epstein if he could tell his younger self one piece of advice what it would be. Talkin’ Pitt Episode Twenty-One Senior Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach Brenna MacDonald is back again to be this episode’s guest host. For this week's episode, we are pleased to have Coach Jesse Wright on. Coach Wright has spent over two decades in the high-performance sports culture, including working with teams in the NBA, NFL, NCAA, and the private sector. He most recently spent 14 years with the Philadelphia 76ers, first as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and then as the Director of Performance Science. During this time, he was named the NBA’s Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year in 2013, an award voted on by his contemporaries in the league. Coach Wright is also the author of the book “The Intent is to Grow: A Young Coach is Guided Along The Path To Becoming a True Professional.” Coach MacDonald and Coach Wright dive into a discussion about The Intent to Grow book. During this chat, Coach Wright gives some great advice he has for younger coaches in the profession. Talkin’ Pitt Episode Twenty Coach Young is back again to be this episode’s guest host. This week’s guest is Coach Alonzo Webb III. Coach Zo is the Associate Head Coach/ Recruiting Coordinator, overseeing the jumps and multi-events. Coach Zo has a long-standing history with the University of Pittsburgh, not just from a coaching standpoint but as an athlete, too, as he competed on the track & field team. In this episode, Coach Zo gives the background story of how he got into coaching after an injury and how the support of his teammates, who wanted him to coach the group, led him to his first opportunity in coaching. Later in the episode, Coach Young learns of the evolution of strength and conditioning at Pitt over the last 20 years.
